Darvish strikes out 10 as Rangers dominate Angels 8-3

ANAHEIM, California — Rangers right-handed pitcher Yu Darvish struck out 10 batters and gave up five hits over seven innings and allow no runs as Texas defeated the Los Angeles Angels 8-3 Thursday at Angel Stadium.

Darvish struck out two batters in each inning from the second through the fifth. He retired the Angels in order in the fourth and seventh innings to go to 1-1 on the season.

Texas also got their bats going as Carlos Gomez and Nomar Mazara each hit a home run. It was part of a performance that saw all but one batter in the starting lineup get a hit as the Rangers tallied 11.

Gomez got to Los Angeles starter Ricky Nolasco early with a home run on his second pitch of the day that went over the center field fence for a leadoff dinger.

After five innings, Nolasco was done as he threw 97 pitches, gave up five runs, and eight hits. He struck out seven Rangers and walked none of them.

The big man with the bat was catcher Robinson Chirinos who had two hits and three RBI and two runs. In the second inning, he hit a double to help the Rangers take a 3-0 lead along with a single by Jurickson Profar.

When Mazara hit his two-run home run in the third, the lead began to increase for Texas as they held a 5-0 lead.

Later, they grew it to 8-0 in the sixth with a two-run single from Chirinos and an RBI single from Shin-Soo Choo.

The Angels prevented a shutout with Danny Espinosa hitting a two-run shot with two outs in the ninth inning.

As the Rangers win their second consecutive series 2-1 to start the year, they travel to Seattle where they take on the Mariners with a 9:10 first pitch on Fox Sports Radio 1400. Pregame is at 8:30 with Jared Sandler, and Eric Nadel and Matt Hicks will provide the play-by-play.

Early indications are RHP Andrew Cashner will get the start for the Rangers tomorrow, according to manager Jeff Banister. However, RHP Nick Martinez could be another option.
