Spurs overcome 11-point deficit to beat Mavericks 102-89

DALLAS — The San Antonio Spurs went on a 25-8 third-quarter run to overcome an 11-point halftime deficit and knock off the Dallas Mavericks 102-89 Friday at the American Airlines Center.

With LaMarcus Aldridge, Paul Gasol, Kawhi Leonard, Manu Ginobili, Danny Green, and Dejounte Murray all sitting out for the Spurs, San Antonio guard Bryn Forbes broke out and had a game-high 27 points. The rookie out of Michigan State went 10-of-19 from field goal range, including 4-of-9 from beyond the 3-point line, along with a perfect 3-of-3 from the free throw line. He scored 22 points alone in the first half. The rookie played 29 minutes total and dished six assists and grabbed three rebounds.

Spurs rookie guard Bryn Forbes tallied a career-high (game-high) 27 points (10-19 FGs, 4-9 3FGs, 3-3 FTs), including 22 in the first half (17 in the second quarter), to go along with three rebounds and a team-high six assists in 29 minutes off the bench.

Dallas forward Dirk Nowitzki made his 1,392nd game for the Mavericks, passing former Maverick Jason Kidd on the NBA’s all-time games played list. Nowitzki is now tied with Tim Duncan for seventh place on the NBA’s all-time games played list. Nowitzki finished with eight points and three rebounds in 16 minutes played.

Another Maverick also made Kidd relevant as guard J.J. Barea appeared in his 500th game with Dallas, tying Kidd for ninth place on the Mavericks’ all-time games played list. Barea finished with eight points, two rebounds, and a game-high eight assists in 11 first-half minutes coming off the bench.

The Mavericks drop to 32-47 and face the Phoenix Suns (23-57) for a 5:00 p.m. tip-off Sunday at the Talking Stick Resort Arena in the desert.
