Arkansas looking for SEC West crown with series sweep at Texas A&M

COLLEGE STATION — The No. 14 Arkansas Razorbacks will face the No. 24 Texas A&M Aggies for a three-game series at Blue Bell Park with first pitch at 6:30 p.m. on Fox Sports Radio 1400 and Phil Elson on the play-by-play.

Speaking of Phil, we had a chance to catch up with him and preview the three-game series and run down the scenarios of what it would take for the Razorbacks to win the Southeastern Conference Western Division:

The Razorbacks will need to sweep the Aggies, all three games, and then hope for the Mississippi State Bulldogs to win the series against 2-1 against the LSU Tigers, who are currently in first place.

If the scenario would to hold, the Razorbacks would win its fifth such division championship since joining the SEC.

Arkansas is coming off of its fifth series win of the SEC season after winning two of three against Vanderbilt in last week’s sendoff from Baum Stadium. Trevor Stephan tallied 11 strikeouts in seven innings for the second consecutive week. Like last week, Stephan will get the game one start against the Aggies Thursday night with a team-leading 3.21 ERA and 27 strikeouts over his last three starts.

Arkansas sophomore shortstop Jax Biggers has been a big part of the Razorbacks’ success in 2017. Over the past week, he was named one of 13 semifinalists for the 2017 Brooks Wallace Award, which is awarded to the nation’s best shortstop. Currently, Biggers is batting .325, which is 15th-best in the SEC. The Missouri City, Texas native also leads the team with a .321 average in SEC play with six extra-base hits, nine RBI, and a .417 slugging percentage.

Biggers is on pace to be the first Hogs shortstop since Scott Hode in 2005 to hit over .300 in a season and currently possesses the highest average of any primary SEC shortstop.

Game one will be at 6:30 p.m., game two on Friday at 6:30 p.m., and game three on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
