ROUND ROCK, Texas — Will Middlebrooks hit a two-run home run in the the bottom of the first inning as part of the Round Rock Express’ 7-3 win over the Memphis Redbirds Saturday at Dell Diamond.
The dinger was the former Liberty-Eylau product’s 10th of the season and gave the Express a 2-0 lead over Memphis to start the first frame. Middlebrooks played designated hitter for Round Rock as Jason Martinson played third base. Overall, Middlebrooks went 1-of-5 with two RBI on the evening and one left on base.
Atlanta Rabb Drew Stubbs had a noteworthy performance for the Express as well. The centerfielder went 2-of-3 at the plate and three RBI along with one walk and one strikeout.
Shortstop Jurickson Profar went 2-for-5 at the plate and drove in two RBI.
Right-handed pitcher James Dykstra made his first start of the season and went 4.0 innings, allowing two runs (all earned) on five hits, giving up a walk, and striking out three Redbirds batters. Of Dykstra’s 73 pitches, 44 were strikes.
Right-handed reliever Tanner Scheppers got 2.0 innings of work as he scored his third consecutive scoreless outing for Round Rock.
The Express are riding a three-game winning streak and have a 34-35 record, good for third place in the American League Southern division of the Pacific Coast League. Round Rock is 7.5 games behind the Redbirds, who have a 41-27 record, the second-best in Triple-A ball.
Round Rock hosts Memphis at 1:05 p.m. Central Time at Dell Diamond. The Express will start right-handed pitcher Eddie Gamboa against the Redbirds. Gamboa has a 5-5 record on the season and a 6.62 ERA.
