Shin-Soo Choo lost a fly ball in the sun in the bottom of the ninth inning with the bases loaded and two outs and the Kansas City Royals (45-45) beat the Texas Rangers 4-3 avoideding a 3-game Rangers (45-46) series sweep. The fly ball hit by Lorenzo Cain should have been caught forcing extra innings but Choo was unable to hold on the ball that deflected off his glove scoring Alex Gordon.
Rangers starter Yu Darvish pitched 6 and two-thirds innings allowing only 8 hits, 3 runs (2 earned), walking 1 and striking out six. However, Darvish’s Rangers teammates were unable to generate enough runs to put him in the position to win.
Darvish had a throwing error in the first inning and it was the first of his career. Darvish also passed up Nolan Ryan while moving into fourth place all-time on the Rangers strike out list with 940 strikeouts.
Choo dropped fly results in Jason Grilli hard luck loss
