TEXARKANA — Arkansas High fell short of the century mark Friday at Razorback Gymnasium as senior forward Robert James missed two free throws as time expired in the Razorbacks’ 99-32 win over the De Queen Leopards.
Leading 65-22 at halftime, the officials started a running clock throughout the rest of the game. Coming into the game, the Leopards had given up 40.5 points per game.
For Arkansas High head coach Sam Weaver, the goal of Friday’s game with a now 0-14 (0-5 conference) team was to get back to playing their brand of basketball.
“The main focus of this game was we wanted to focus on things that we had worked on preparation for the week and see how well we could do that,” said Weaver. “And we wanted to make sure that we ran the floor and got out in transition and pushed the ball. And that’s the way we play. What we wanted to work on tonight was our style of play.”
Guards Taviron Oliver and Kyndal Martin scored 26 and 24 points as the Hogs returned to their style of play, a fast-paced, full-court press that takes advantage of teams in the transition game.
The Razorbacks defense held the Leopards to such low scoring totals that no De Queen player was able to crack double digits. The highest scorer was guard Sedrick Bell with eight points.
Arkansas High also shot 13-for-18 from the free throw line, another improvement over Tuesday’s loss to Hot Springs.
The Razorbacks now rest up for a week and get ready to host Hot Springs Lakeside on Jan. 20.
Said Weaver: “That’s the first half of the conference. That was the last part of the first half there. So, we start over. We got Lakeside a week from tonight, which is where we started the whole thing.”
