Arkansas High football coaching legend to be inducted into Hall of Fame

TEXARKANA — Johnny Toombs, the winningest head football coach in Arkansas High history, will be inducted into the Fox Fan Fest Hall of Fame on August 19.

The announcement came on “The Leadoff Man” with Bob DelGiorno on Friday.

“I really do appreciate this offer,” said Toombs. “As I said, I’ve been there before. I think it’s great for Texarkana. I think the work that y’all do with the radio is really taken a sports hot bed in Texarkana and really taken it to another level, another avenue to get exposure for them. And I really appreciate what y’all do. Again, I’m very proud to receive this.”

It will be the fourth hall of fame induction for the former Razorbacks head coach from 1989-98. He has already been inducted in the Arkansas Coaches Hall of Fame, Arkansas High School Athletic Directors Hall of Fame, and the Gurdon (Arkansas) Athletic Hall of Fame.

Said Toombs: “I’ve pretty much run the gamut now as a player and a coach and an athletic director and then in Texarkana. I’m overwhelmed. I don’t know how deserving I am, but I know no one will appreciate it anymore than I do.”

One of Toombs’ former players, Eric Warfield, who played with the Kansas City Chiefs from 1998-2005, is already in the Fox Fan Fest Hall of Fame.

“Eric Warfield is one of my favorite guys,” said Toombs. “He has become a close friend. They’re friends when you coach them but when they leave you can get even closer to them. It goes beyond coaching them. It’s really admiring what they’ve done.”

Fox Fan Fest will be August 19 at the Texarkana Convention Center near the Hilton Garden Inn off Cowhorn Creek. To purchase tickets or sponsorship, call 903-255-7935.
