Arkansas High wins Gunslinger Tournament

NEW BOSTON — The Arkansas High Razorbacks boys team out-dueled the Idabel (OK) Warriors 75-38 in the championship game to take home first place in the 2016 Gunslinger Tournament Saturday.

“It means a great deal for the kids,” said Coach Sam Weaver. “When you look at their recent history of the basketball team, they hadn’t had a lot of success. And to get off to a 7-1 start this year and win a championship in the preseason I think is a really positive step for this basketball team.”

Senior point guard Taviron Oliver led all scorers with 34 points, including five three-pointers and going 3-for-5 from the free throw line.

“He’s been scoring well all year,” Weaver said. “If he didn’t score, I’d be a little bit surprised because he’s been scoring well all year. I think he shot it well. And it got a little bit out of control in the second quarter trying to do too much trying to get to the basket. He’s got to understand to let the game flow and let it come to him. And he does that. He’s good when he does that.”

Oliver wasn’t the only Razorback who got a little out of control on the evening. The Hogs four players with three or more fouls, including center Johnny Gullatt who committed four fouls.

Said Weaver: “We didn’t look real sharp, didn’t execute very well. But we’re still able to come out with a win.”

The first-year head coach at Arkansas High attributes the team’s sloppy play amid a big victory to playing four games in a week. With the conference schedule opening up Tuesday against rival El Dorado, Weaver is hopeful the rest will allow the Razorbacks to play more fundamentally sound basketball.

“We got to get rest and get our legs back under us,” Weaver said. “El Dorado is a tough opponent, especially at their place. My first time going down there.

“They’re a very formidable opponent and we just got to go down and make sure that we stay focused on what we do. And if we go in and play right, I think we have a chance.”

Fox Sports 1400 will carry the action live Tuesday, Dec. 13 from El Dorado with pregame starting at 4:30 p.m.
