Mavs take explosive point guard Dennis Smith, Jr. in first round

DALLAS — The Dallas Mavericks selected North Carolina State point guard Dennis Smith, Jr. with the ninth overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft Thursday.

The 6-3, 195-pound freshman averaged 18.1 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 6.2 per game while also shooting .455 from field goal range, along with going .359 from 3-point range and .715 from the free throw line.

Smith earned ACC Freshman of the Year and All-ACC Second Team honors after leading the conference in assists (13th nationwide) and finishing sixth in scoring in the ACC. The freshman also set an NC State freshman record with 62 steals.

The Trinity Christian School product grew up in Fayetteville, North Carolina, averaging 22.2 points per game en route to being named North Carolina Gatorade Player of the Year.
