NEW BOSTON, Texas – Host New Boston got off to a good start Thursday at Lions Gymnasium in both the boys and girls divisions of the annual Gunslinger Shootout.

In a morning game, New Boston’s boys rallied from a 25-16 halftime deficit to beat Daingerfield, 47-40. Later, the Lady Lions were clicking on all cylinders to rout Hope, 64-29.

Bishop Fields poured in 15 points to lead the Lions past Daingerfield, with Kyle Atkinson contributing 12. Chloe David led New Boston’s girls with 20 points, and Grace Duffer added 18.

The most excited game Thursday saw Liberty-Eylau (8-5) survive Fouke, 57-56. There was lots of offense the first three quarters, but only 10 points scored in the final eight minutes. Eliyah Howard scored all five of L-E’s fourth quarter points from the free throw line, the final one coming with 1:08 left. 

Howard finished with a game-high 18 points, whith Kyla Kosten contributing 11. Taylor Harden led the Lady Panthers with 13 points. Mallory Oliver scored 12, and Crysta Larey added 11.

“I told Fouke’s coach afterwards that we needed games like this,” said L-E coach Aquanette Watson. “We don’t want to blow everybody out, and we don’t want to get blown out. Fouke doesn’t play volleyball, and their girls were really executing well tonight. They got some wide open shots tonight, but were going to continue playing man defense to get in shape for district.”

Liberty-Eylau’s boys were not challenged by Idabel’s junior varsity, the Leopards racing out to a 21-7 lead in the first quarter. R’Aiken Harris led L-E’s attack with 20 points. Kentraile Akins and Deanu Daniels scored 10 points each.

In other opening action, Pleasant Grove’s girls buried Texas High’s junior varsity, 77-35. Arkansas High’s girls beat Liberty-Eylau’s jayvee, 54-16.

Paris’ boys had no trouble with Hope, 74-47. Arkansas High’s boys won their first game over Clarksville, 56-46.

Friday’s action tips off at 9:30 a.m. with Pleasant Grove’s girls playing Arkansas High. Daingerfield’s boys face Idabel at 11, with Texas High’s JV girls challenging L-E’s junior varsity at 12:30 p.m. New Boston’s boys play L-E at 2 p.m.

In other action Friday, Fouke and Hope clash at 3:30 p.m. Hope’s boys play Clarksville at 5 p.m. L-E’s girls play New Boston at 6:30 p.m., and Paris plays Arkansas High in the finale.
