Fox Sports Texarkana presents eighth-ranked Pleasant Grove and coach Barry Norton’s first edition of Arkansas High Razorbacks Friday night at 7:30 in Hawk Stadium.
Both Pleasant Grove coach Josh Gibson and the Razorbacks’ Norton are not sure about what the fans can expect when the two Texarkana schools collide.
Norton is concerned about the Hawks’ wing-T offense led by sophomore quarterback Ben Harmon. The young talent has beaten out two senior returners for the starting job.
“We have no video on Pleasant Grove,” said Norton, who never had a losing season in his 18 years as Texas High’s head coach. “We did see them in a scrimmage. Harmon gives them a passing threat. Pleasant Grove’s seven-on-seven team made it to the state quarter-finals with Harmon throwing the football.”
The Razorbacks feature a new offense, defense and outlook in Arkansas’ Class 6A this fall.
“The thing we know is that Coach Norton will have Arkansas High fired up, and they have a good program,” Pleasant Grove’s Gibson said. “The Razorbacks are very athletic. We’ll have a great atmosphere at Hawk Stadium. Both teams are also on the rise.
“In the first game of the season nobody really knows what’s going to happen. We’re preparing for anything and everything.”
Arkansas High had not selected a starting quarterback earlier in the week. Junior Drake Browning started last year and is back. However, senior Wes Kift and sophomore Sean Foreback are in the picture.
“Browning has such a great skill set; he can do so many things for us,” Norton said. “Wes is a really smart kid, and Sean has a great arm and upside. Heck, I may play all three.”
