Wolves devour Razorbacks 8-6 with seven unanswered runs

TEXARKANA — Arkansas High surrendered seven unanswered runs against the Lake Hamilton Wolves to suffer an 8-6 loss Saturday afternoon at Razorback Field.

After starting pitcher Korey Wasson gave up five runs on five hits, and walked four Hogs batters over 3.0 innings pitched, Lake Hamilton head coach Mac Hurley inserted Kirk Shildgen as reliever. The senior left-handed pitcher gave up just one run on four hits, walked three, and struck out two through the remaining four innings.

Arkansas High had five errors, two of which resulted in runs for the Wolves, the difference in the game.

The Razorbacks were also the victims of a controversial call to conclude the top of the sixth inning. With bases loaded, Lake Hamilton designated hitter Tanner King hit a two-out pop-fly to left field. Left fielder Jake Johnson caught the ball close to the ground during a sliding catch. The infield umpire ruled it an out to end the Wolves’ half of the sixth.

During the middle of the sixth, Coach Hurley asked the umpires to appeal. During the appeal, the home plate umpire overruled the infield umpire and declared it was not a catch. The new ruling was an RBI single by King that drove in Zach Ross to trim Arkansas High’s lead to 6-4.

Relief pitcher Matthew Mobley got the strikeout for Arkansas High on a payoff pitch during the next at-bat for Lake Hamilton to finally give the Razorbacks their turn at the bat in the bottom of the sixth, where the Hogs had two hits but stranded two runners.

The Wolves batted around in the top of the seventh with nine-hole hitter Ben Slate leading off with a double. Lake Hamilton scored four additional runs to take the lead and force Arkansas High in a two-run deficit to go the bottom of the seventh.

Arkansas High went four batters deep in the lineup before pinch hitter Avery Farren hit a pop-fly to end the game.

The only bearing the loss had in the 6A West Tournament consolation game is it now sends the Hogs to play at 5:30 p.m. first pitch on Thursday against the third seed from the 6A East. Broadcast time will be 5:00 p.m. from Benton on Fox Sports Radio 1400.
