TEXARKANA, Texas – The Texas High School Art Department will host an Art Show on Friday, February 1 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. in the Sullivan Performing Arts Center Foyer, 3941 Summerhill Road. The event is free and open to the public. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Grace Comer Memorial Scholarship Fund at Texas High.
Grace was killed on August 29, 2018 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. She had been a student at TISD since the first grade, was scheduled to graduate from Texas High School in May 2019 and then attend University of North Texas majoring in Art. Grace was the daughter of Tonya & Russell Comer.
“When Grace passed away, our Art Club immediately started thinking of ways to honor her,” said Shea Phillips, THS Art Teacher. “She was such a big part of our department and touched all of our lives. We wanted to do something big that would make an impact and bring our community together. So many artists and art lovers reached out to us at that time and wanted to help. This art show is the perfect way to celebrate her life and raise money for a scholarship in her memory.”
The Art Show will include art from professional, local and student artists. Some work will be for display only and an estimated 75 pieces will be for Silent Auction with minimum bids. “Presently, we have donations of items from jewelry to oil painting to sculpture,” shared Phillips. There is something for everyone and in all price ranges. We have set our fundraising goal at $5,000 in order to do a $1,000 scholarship for the next five years to a THS senior who plans on majoring in Art.
The Texas High School Culinary Arts Program will be providing refreshments and heavy hors d’oeuvres for guests and there will be a variety of student performances during the event.
