Liberty-Eylau’s boys fall; Lady Leopards win in OT

Liberty-Eylau’s boys paid a high price at the Rader Dome for beating Paris in the championship basketball game at New Boston’s Gunslinger Shootout.

The two schools opened district play Friday night, and Paris scored the game’s first 12 points on its way to a surprisingly easy 75-51 victory.

L-E finally scored with 2:53 left in the first quarter, the Wildcats taking a 22-12 lead into the second period. It didn’t get any better, the Leopards turning the ball over faster than they could score points. Jamion Mitchell scored 16 of his game-high 18 points in the first half. Cameron Jones contributed 10 of his 12 points in the first two quarters, while Trey Johnson added 11 of his 17 in the opening half.

Both teams were ice-cold in the second half, the Wildcats building a 31-point cushion midway into the final stanza. Howard Barrow led the Leopards with 12 points, with Daveoncha Meadows adding 11.

Kyla Coston sparks L-E girls in overtime

Liberty-Eylau’s girls rallied to beat Paris in overtime, 80-77.

Paris’ girls came close to scoring a shocking win over the favored Lady Leopards. The Lady Wildcats scored the game’s first seven points, trailing only twice in the first half before taking a 37-32 lead at intermission. Peaches Jackson scored 14 of her game-high 23 points in the first half, with teammate Quinayna Savage pouring in 22 points.

It appeared L-E was in control with a 5-point lead and only a minute left in regulation. The Wildcats got a 3-pointer and two free throws to force the extra period. The Leopards outscored Paris 10-7 in the overtime with Kyla Coston scoring six of her 11 points. Eliyah Howard led L-E’s offense with 17 points. Skylier Bailey had 15 points, while Keeley Norris added 10 points and six rebounds.

Pleasant Grove sweeps Pirates on the road

PITTSBURG, Texas – Pleasant Grove’s boys won their district opener over Pittsburg, 59-46. Dre Robinson led the Hawks with 18 points, and Kamren Woods added 11.

The Lady Hawks cruised past Pittsburg, 74-45. Shanequa Henry tallied 29 points. Keshawn Davis scored 11, with Asia Lloyd adding 10.

Texas High boys escape with 58-55 win

Darian Glinton’s 3-point attempt at the final buzzer was off target Friday night at the Tiger Center as Texas High escaped with a 58-55 win over Mount Pleasant in both teams’ district opener.

The host Tigers led by as many as 16 in the first half. Mount Pleasant (12-9, 0-1) rallied in the final quarter behind Glinton, who led all scorers with 22 points.

Demarquis Vaughn led Texas High (20-6, 1-0) with 18 points. Kyle Wright tallied 15, while C.J. Kelly scored 11. The win earned coach Keith Jones his first 20-win season as a head coach.

Lady Tigers roll over Mount Pleasant

Texas High’s girls roared out to a commanding lead early en route to a 63-29 victory over Mount Pleasant.

The host Tigers led 34-8 at intermission. Kerrigan Dunn paced the winners with 14 points. Antonia Porter swished 13, while Kiasyia Morrison scored 12.

Pewitt drops two games to Queen City

QUEEN CITY, Texas – Queen City’s boys won their second straight district game Friday night by defeating Paul Pewitt, 57-43.

Colton Davis led the Bulldogs with 17 points. Queen City hosts Hooks next Tuesday.

The Lady Dawgs beat Paul Pewitt, 40-33. Cece Walker poured in 16 points, adding 15 rebounds and 12 steals. Hannah Fitts had 11 points for the winners. Dede Jones led the Lady Brahmas with 13 points, with Mya Heath adding 11.

Warriors fall to top-ranked Kirby

Trinity Christian slipped to 10-12 on the season Friday night losing to top-ranked Kirby, 78-49.

Jakob Martin led the Warriors with 19 points, while Alex Cobb contributed 18.

In a preliminary contest, Trinity Christian’s junior varsity upset Kirby, 42-32. Will Smith scored 11 points for the Warriors, while Silas Nix netted 10.

Friday’s varsity game will be replayed at cable channel 10 at 7 p.m. next Wednesday.

Atlanta boys rout DeKalb Bears

DEKALB, Texas – Atlanta had four boys scoring in double digits Friday night as the Rabbs routed DeKalb, 81-42.

Charlie Powell led the winners with 22 points. Hunter Allen had 17 points, Daimion Collins 13 and Kylan Carter 10. Alex Clark led the Bears with 13 points, while Logan Corbett contributed 10.

The Lady Rabbs raced out to a 24-8 lead  in the first eight minutes to beat DeKalb, 71-38.

Keyona Easter continued her hot shooting in district with 30 points, 6 assists and 9 steals. Sheveonia Smith had 18 points, while Dyamond Grant contributed 9 points and 8 rebounds.
