Lindale’s 7-1 postman no match for Tigers’ 6-7 Kelly
Texas High’s tall task came much easier than expected Tuesday at the Tiger Center.
The Tigers’ 6-7 junior postman C.J. Kelly won the battle of the big men with Lindale’s 7-1 Cody Collinsworth, and Texas High walked away with a convincing 68-49 victory. THS (21-6, 2-0) remains on top of District 15-5A with the win, while handing the Eagles (19-5, 1-1) their first league setback.
Earlier Tuesday, the Lady Tigers improved to 19-6 overall and 4-0 in district by routing Lindale, 73-48.
“I had no idea we’d win by as many as we did; I thought it would come down to the wire, or it would be a close game,” THS coach Keith Jones said. “We had a six-point lead at the half, and we really played well in the second half. We came out and executed well. They got tired and started missing some shots that they made in the first half.”
Senior guard Kyle Wright started the game hot with four treys against the Eagles’ zone in the first quarter, helping the Tigers build a 23-15 cushion. Less than two minutes later the game was tied 23-all. Collinsworth sparked that rally, but left the floor in the final minutes of the first half for a breather. That’s when Kelly poured in most of his 13 first half points. Wright finished with 17 of his 25 points in the first two quarters, giving Texas High a 36-30 edge at intermission.
When the Eagles decided to go man-to-man on defense, Texas High spread the floor and started to dominate with its quickness. Kelly really poured it on, finishing with a game-high 29 points, 14 rebounds and 3 blocks. That compared to Collinsworth’s 12 points, 6 rebounds and 4 blocks.
Rone, Dunn ignite Lady Tigers’ offense
Lindale led the Lady Tigers after eight minutes. That changed dramatically in the second quarter when THS exploded for 22 second quarter points to pull away. That margin grew quickly in the second half with six different players scoring at least four points for Texas High.
Amiya Rone came off the bench late in the first quarter to rally the Tigers within a single point going to the second quarter. Rone finished with a double-double, scoring 12 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Kerrighan Dunn also had 12 points, seven in the second half.
Three other Tigers scored in double digits with Unique McBride adding 11 points, Antonia Porter 10, and Ashanti Northcross 10.
Post Shelbi Steen led the Lady Eagles (6-12, 0-4) with 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
Texas High’s defense forced 40 turnovers with its pressure.
Both Texas High’s boys and girls face stiff challenges Friday at Sulphur Springs.
Liberty-Eylau splits at North Lamar
PARIS, Texas – Freshman Bryanna Block poured in a game-high 16 points Tuesday night to lead Liberty-Eylau (21-10, 3-1) past North Lamar in district play.
Senior Kyla Coston had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Daycoria Meadows had 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Liberty-Eylau’s boys started slow, and it cost the Leopards a 64-63 loss to North Lamar.
The host Panthers led 15-7 after the first quarter only to see L-E rally at the free throw line. D. Meadows contributed 15 points with four treys to lead the Leopards. Howard Barrow had 14 points as L-E slipped to 0-2 in district.
L-E will be back in action next Tuesday at Pittsburg.
Arkansas High drop pair to Wildcats
Jayla Easter’s big effort went for naught Tuesday night at Razorback Gym, the Lady Backs falling to El Dorado, 64-41. Easter scored 12 points and pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds.
Jamyia Montgomery had 7 points and 6 rebounds for Arkansas High, with Staijah Taylor, Cedrianna Daniels and Z’niah Nelson all contributing 6 points.
Jessica Morton led the the Lady Cats with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Tasha Richardson scored 14 points, and Grace Murray added 11.
Arkansas High’s boys led 22-20 at halftime, but ended up losing to El Dorado in overtime, 60-55.
The Wildcats improved to 6-9 overall and 2-2 in conference, while AHS slipped to 3-11 and 0-4, respectively.
Both Arkansas High teams will be back in action Friday at Hot Springs Lakeside, the varsity girls tipping off at 6 p.m.
Fouke wins on buzzer beater by Hardin
ASHDOWN, Ark. – Taylor Hardin caught a court-length pass from Mallory Oliver and buried a 3-pointer at the buzzer Tuesday night as Fouke rallied past Ashdown, 49-48.
Fouke (17-3, 5-1) trailed 22-5 after the first quarter, tying the score late in the fourth quarter. That’s when the host Lady Panthers got a steal and layup with seven seconds left. Fouke was missing two of its best players (Whittney McMurry and Jade Perry) due to injuries.
Hardin led the winners with 16 points, with River Watkins adding 12.
Ashdown’s boys improved to 14-1 on the season and remained unbeaten in league play at 6-0 with a 60-13 win over an outmanned Fouke team.
The host Panthers led 20-0 after the first quarter, and 40-1 at halftime.
Trinity Christian rips Umpire on road
UMPIRE, Ark. – Alex Cobb drained 20 points, while Jakob Martin dominated the glass with 9 rebounds to lead Trinity Christian (11-13) past Umpire, 71-45.
DeKalb earns split with Lions
NEW BOSTON, Texas – DeKalb’s boys climbed back into playoff contention Tuesday by defeating Bowie County rival New Boston, 63-46. The Bears stand 9-8 on the season and 3-2 in district. New Boston falls to 3-19 and 1-4, respectively.
The Lady Lions routed DeKalb, 74-38. New Boston improves to 16-8 on the year and 6-0 in district.
Hornets rebound against Queen City, 60-40
HOOKS, Texas – Tyler Nolan swished 15 points for Queen City Tuesday night, but it wasn’t enough as the Hooks Hornets rolled to a 60-40 victory.
