LONGVIEW, Texas – Texas High’s Lady Tigers came out on fire Monday night in its 5A bi-district playoff game with John Tyler at Lobo Coliseum.
The Lady Tigers (25-7) led 10-0 less than two minutes into the game, and 19-2 with four minutes still remaining in the first quarter. John Tyler (16-16) never recovered, and THS eliminated the Lady Lions, 67-34.
“We did exactly what we wanted to do with our press,” said Texas High coach Shonda Wilson. “It’s always been our plan to come out and press. That’s the way we play, and tonight we came away with a win.”
Texas High’s roster features eight seniors, and most have been up with the varsity since they were freshmen. On this particular night senior Antonia Porter frustrated the Lions with her outside shooting and spectacular passing.
Porter leads Lady Tigers with 20 points
Porter led the Tigers’ offense with 20 points, 18 coming on six 3-pointers. She also had six assists.
“When Antonia is hot we’re going to give her the ball,” said Wilson. “A lot of people don’t know that she’s an incredible passer. I think she will get an opportunity to play college basketball. The girls were working hard tonight. They were confident from the beginning.”
Junior Kerrighan Dunn was the only other Tigers scoring in double digits with 12 points.
Most of the Lions’ offense came from junior Asia Parker, who contributed 12 points, 10 rebounds and four assists.
The Tigers advance to play Lancaster or Cleburne later this week.
L-E girls eliminated by Kilgore
MARSHALL, Texas – Free throws were a decisive factor in favor of Kilgore Monday night as the Lady Bulldogs eliminated Liberty-Eylau from the 4A playoffs, 47-43.
“We had a good run this year, just wish it had lasted longer,” said L-E coach Aquanetta Watson. “It was a hard fought game. There’s things we could have done better. Their free throw shooting was the difference.”
The game was a foul-fest with 29 called on the Leopards and 18 on Kilgore. The Bulldogs outscored L-E from the charity stripe, 27-16, despite L-E converting a season-best 16 of 23 free throws.
Three L-E starters fouled out of the game.
Daycoria Meadows led the Lady Leopards offense with 16 points, with Keeley Norris contributing 12. L-E finished 18-12. while Kilgore improved to 16-8.
