Texas High girls, Lady Hawks cruise into regional quarterfinals

Pleasant Grove coach Marsha Cowling led her girls past Crandall Friday night in a 4A area playoff game at Spring Hill High School in Longview.

 

TYLER, Texas – Texas High and Pleasant Grove won their respective area round playoff games Friday night.

The Lady Tigers trailed most of the game at Tyler Junior College, but rallied to beat Cleburne (28-9), 58-51. Texas High (26-8) advances to the Region II-5A quarterfinals to play Lufkin or North Forney.

Texas High was leading 22-16 in the second quarter when Cleburne went on a 14-0 run to build an eight-point cushion at intermission. The Tigers shot only 23 percent in the first half, improving to 46 percent in the final two quarters.

The Tigers trailed 43-42 going to the final quarter. That’s when Cleburne missed eight straight shots, and Texas High captured the lead for good on a basket by Kerrighan Dunn and 3-pointer by Antonia Porter.

Dunn led all scorers with 21 points, with Porter contributing 15.  Caitlyn Cross had 14 points for Cleburne, with Jayla Johnson and Haley Jones adding 13 each.

Cleburne outscored the Tigers from the free throw line by 15 points, converting 20 of 32 charity shots.

Texas High players were celebrating Friday night after rallying past Cleburne in a 5A area playoff game at Tyler Junior College.

Lady Hawks rout Crandall, 69-31

LONGVIEW, Texas – Pleasant Grove (28-3)  was in transition all night, building an 18-5 advantage in the first eight minutes on its way to a 69-31 win over Crandall in the Region II-4A area playoffs.

The Lady Pirates struggled with Pleasant Grove’s pressing defense from the opening tip. The Hawks’ lead was 36-11 at halftime, and that lead grew in the fourth quarter when coach Marsha Cowling cleared her bench. The backups outscored Crandall, 22-10.

The Hawks will play Bullard or Brownsboro in the regional quarterfinals next week.

Razorbacks fall at Lake Hamilton

PEARCY, Ark. – Arkansas High’s string of tough loses in 2018-19 continued Friday night with the Razorbacks losing at Lake Hamilton, 74-60.

Micah Yarber led Arkansas High with 14 points, while Christian Johnson contributed 13.
