SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Texas A&M University-Texarkana (6-8) got back into the win column Thursday by winning the nightcap of a doubleheader with Evangel University, 2-1. The Crusaders won the opener, 2-1.
Caleb Baker pitched five strong innings, scattering six hits, walking two and striking out two to get the win for A&M. Jordan Johnson earned a save with two walks and two strikeouts in the seventh inning.
The Crusaders (8-3) scored their only run in the first inning off Baker. Harrison Steven drove in the host team’s run with a single.
Tim Frith and Wyatt Stavinoha had run-scoring hits for the Eagles in the fourth. Frith finished with two hits.
Eagles’ Davis drops another heart-breaker
The first game was a pitcher’s duel between Evangel’s Bret Hoffman and Texarkana’s Jared Davis.
Once again Davis didn’t get much support at the plate. Hoffman went the distance for the Crusaders, allowing three hits, walking three and striking out two. Davis scattered four hits in six innings of work, walking none and striking out seven.
Both teams scored in the first inning. The Eagles captured their only lead when Marquise Glenn scored after a leadoff hit. Brayden Cook and Isaac D’Agostino had Texarkana’s other two hits.
The two schools play another doubleheader Friday, starting at noon.
