There was no quit in Texas A&M University-Texarkana’s softball team Tuesday, but that was little consolation for the Eagles after dropping a doubleheader to Central Baptist College.
The visiting Mustangs built big leads early in both games, and then survived late rallies to win at Spring Lake Park, 8-7 and 9-5. Central Baptist improved to 6-9 with the two wins, while the Eagles slipped to 4-5.
Texarkana trailed 8-0 in the opener going to the bottom of the sixth. The Eagles scored twice in the sixth, and five more in the seventh.
Bierschenk shines for Eagles
Lauren Bierschenk led the Eagles at the plate with three hits, a run scored and two RBI. Hannah Cooper and Jordyn Logan had two hits each, with Logan driving home three runs. Kaylee St. John led the Mustangs at the plate with three hits and three RBI. Katie Goike, Rachael Jones and Katlyn Gordon had two hits each.
Kym House was the winning pitcher, with late relief from Shayla Irving. Cassie Vasquez took the loss for Texarkana.
The Mustangs’ Rachel Gregory took a no-hitter into the sixth inning in the nightcap. Central Baptist led 7-0. Bierschenk, a junior from Valley View, Texas, singled home a run to break up the no-hit bid. Cooper then doubled home Bierschenk.
Texarkana scored three more runs in the seventh, but it was too little, too late. Gregory got the win, with late relief from Brooke Trout. Ashley Nipper was the losing pitcher for the Eagles.
The Eagles struggled defensively in both games with six total errors. Central Baptist played errorless ball.
