Texas lost to the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday in Surprise, 9-5. Delino DeShields went 2-for-3 with a 2-RBI double, and Ronald Guzmán hit a solo home run for the Rangers’ other run. Guzmán has reached safely in each of his first 3 games this spring at 2-for-5 with a home run, double, walk, and hit by pitch. Matt Davidson hit a 2-run long ball in the 9th inning to provide the final score, and he has gone 4-for-7 with a home run and double in spring play. Elvis Andrus posted a double and single in 2 trips in his first Cactus League game of 2019. Reliever Chris Martin recorded a perfect 4th inning with one strikeout. Chicago scored 6 times in the first 2 innings against starter Edinson Vólquez and reliever Jesse Chavez. It was the first time Vólquez has appeared in a game for the Rangers, and his first appearance since elbow surgery in August 2017. Former Rangers Cole Hamels and Tony Barnette pitched for the Cubs in today’s game.
The Rangers will travel to Tempe on Thursday for a 2:10 p.m. CT contest against the Angels, with LHP Drew Smyly making his debut for the club against Halos LHP Tyler Skaggs. The Angels’ FOX Sports West TV broadcast will air live on FOX Sports Southwest in the DFW market tomorrow, while a free audio webcast featuring Jared Sandler and Rangers Executive Vice President John Blake will be available at texasrangers.com.
