The Rangers lost to the A’s by a 4-1 score on Tuesday at Mesa’s historic Hohokam Stadium. Texas received strong outings from starter Drew Smyly (2.0 IP, 1 BB, 3 SO) and Jason Hammel (2.0 IP, 2 SO) to begin the game, holding the home team hitless until the 5th inning. Through two spring starts, Smyly has tossed 3.0 scoreless innings while allowing just one baserunner. The Rangers scored their lone run on a RBI double by Jeff Mathis in the 7th inning, as the club managed just two total hits. Ronald Guzmán’s infield single in the 4th inning was the only other Texas knock in the game. Former Ranger Jurickson Profar hit a two-run single as part of Oakland’s three-run 6th inning.
Additionally, a group of Texas pitchers from major league camp pitched in a minor league game this afternoon in Surprise against the NC Dinos, a professional club from South Korea. The list: RHPs Shawn Kelley, Taylor Guerrieri, Jonathan Hernández, and Nick Gardewine, and LHP Brady Feigl.
The Rangers return to Surprise to take on the Giants on Wednesday, with RHP Shelby Miller (0-0, 18.00) slated to start against San Francisco RHP Chris Stratton (1-1, 4.50). First pitch from Surprise Stadium is set for 2:05 p.m. CT.
