SURPRISE, Ariz. — The Rangers defeated the Giants on Sunday in Scottsdale, 7-6. Texas finished the spring with a 2-0-1 record against San Francisco, as the teams have played 3 times in the past 9 days. Hunter Pence went 3-for-3 today. He homered for a second consecutive game, as he also went deep on Thursday against the Padres in Peoria. The former Giant, who received a standing ovation from the home faithful after the long ball, has now hit safely in 5 straight games at .533 (8-15) with 2 home runs, 2 doubles, 3 walks, and 4 RBI. Patrick Wisdom hit a go-ahead 2-out, 2-run single in the 5th inning, keying the 4-run frame for the Rangers.

Jeff Mathis, who was 1-for-2 with a walk, also had an RBI single in the 5th. Mathis has a 5-game hit streak at 5-for-12. Starter Drew Smyly allowed one run in 2.1 innings, and he has a spring ERA of 1.69 through 3 starts. The pitching staff combined for 14 strikeouts, the club’s highest total in a single game this spring, and overcame 4 unearned runs in the final 3 innings to close out the win. Chase d’Arnaud doubled today, and he has reached safely in each of his first 3 spring games at 2-for-5 with a double, triple, and 3 walks. Zack Granite had a hit, walk, stolen base, and run scored, as he plated the Rangers’ final run on Curtis Terry’s RBI single in the 9th.
Texas is scheduled to play a pair of home games tomorrow in Surprise, starting with a day contest against the Angels at 3:05 p.m. CT. RHP Shelby Miller (1-0, 10.12) will face Halos RHP Matt Harvey (0-0, 3.00). The Angels’ FOX Sports West TV broadcast of the day tilt will air live on FOX Sports Southwest in the DFW market.
In the 9:05 p.m. CT night game against the Royals, the Rangers will start LHP Yohander Méndez (0-1, 9.00) against RHP Homer Bailey (0-0, 0.00). The evening contest marks the first TV broadcast of the spring on FOX Sports Southwest, as Dave Raymond and C.J. Nitkowski will call the game with Sarah Merrifield reporting from field level. There is also a radio broadcast for the night game on 105.3 The Fan, with Eric Nadel and Matt Hicks in the booth.
