AUSTIN, Texas – Freshman catcher Caston Peter hit a double and a homer and drove in five runs to lead No. 12 Texas Baseball to 17-3 run-rule win over Texas Southern Tuesday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

Texas Southern scored the first run of the game in the top of the second inning. The Tigers started the frame with a double and the run scored on a sacrifice fly.After that, it was all Texas.

The Longhorns came right back to take a 4-1 lead in the bottom half of the second, taking advantage of four walks and two hit batters. Texas had just one hit in the inning, a one-out single by Ryan Reynolds to start the rally.

The Longhorns batted around in the inning and two of the runs crossed the plate on wild pitches. Duke Ellis drove in a run with a walk and Eric Kennedy plated another with an RBI groundout.

Texas went up 9-1 after scoring five more runs in the third, this time using in the bats to get it done. The Longhorns scored five runs on five hits, including a pair of two-run doubles.

Reynolds singled for the second time and Shaw was hit by a pitch to put two runners on. Masen Hibbeler drove in the first run of the inning with an RBI double to left field. Hibbeler finished the game 4-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored.

After Lance Ford legged out an infield single to load the bases, Peter ripped a two-run double down the right field line for his first RBI of the season. Kennedy capped off the inning with his own two-run double to right field.

The Longhorns added one more run in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Austin Todd to make the score 10-1.

Texas Southern got two runs back in the sixth to trim the Longhorns lead to 10-3. But then Texas poured it on with a seven-run sixth that included a three-run homer by Peter.

Matt Whelan started and pitched four innings, allowing just one run and striking out five batters to pick up the win. Nico O’Donnell, Matteo Bocchi and Jack Neely all pitched in relief.

Texas hosts a nationally-ranked match up at UFCU Disch-Falk Field this weekend, welcoming No. 11 Texas Tech for the first series of Big 12 play. First pitch of the series opener is scheduled for Friday at 6:30 p.m.
