WACO — Cole Haring hit two home runs to help the Baylor Bears beat the West Virginia Mountaineers 12-0 Saturday afternoon at Baylor Ballpark.
The win delivers the Bears (15-6, 2-0) their first Big 12 series win of the season.
Baylor broke open the game in the fourth inning when they sent 10 Bears to bat and produced seven runs on seven hits. Chase Wehsener, Davis Wendzel, and Shea Langeliers hit an RBI each as Haring hit his second homer of the game, a three-run dinger, to give the Bears a 9-0 lead.
On the mound, starting pitcher James Winston produced six scoreless innings and four strikeouts while lowering his ERA to 0.71 on the season.
“I thought it was a great performance all around,” said Baylor coach Steve Rodriguez. “I was really happy with the way Jimmy Winston went out there and really competed. He threw strikes and let his defense make plays.
“Then our offense did a great job being able to maintain the pressure on them against a pretty good West Virginia pitching staff that was coming in throwing hard. I was really happy with how our guys played, they forced contact and really made them play defense and we were able to get some balls out of the yard which was great.”
Daniel Caruso appeared for the 10th time in relief for 2019 and threw for two scoreless innings before Brooks Helmer took over in the ninth inning. In Helmer’s first career appearance, he retired the Mountaineers to secure the win.
Baylor goes for the series sweep Sunday afternoon with a 12:05 p.m. first pitch from Baylor Ballpark.
