No. 17 TCU

By Brandie Davidson

FORT WORTH — Another strong start on the mound from Nick Lodolo helped propel No. 19 TCU to a 7-4 victory over Oklahoma State Friday night at Lupton Stadium. Adam Oviedo turned in a solid day at the plate two hits and four RBIs.

Nick Lodolo (4-2) was solid over his seven innings on the mound. The junior allowed just two unearned runs on six hits, walked one and struck out eight. He got plenty of run support as TCU scored seven runs on 10 hits.

Conner Shepherd worked an eight pitch, two-out walk in the second to put two runners on for Adam Oviedo. The sophomore connected on a 3-1 pitch and sent it over the left field fence to give TCU a 3-0 lead.

The Horned Frogs tacked on another run in the third as they took advantage of a lead-off error that allowed Hunter Wolfe to reach second. He was standing on third with nobody out and scored easily on a Jake Guenther sacrifice fly for a 4-0 lead.

A two-out rally led to two more runs for the Frogs in the fourth. Shepherd got it going with a base hit and scored on an Oviedo double. His fly ball to center looked like it would end the inning, but the center fielder lost it in the lights and it fell in harmlessly for a double. Bobby Goodloe followed with an RBI-single to drive in Oviedo.

The Cowboys put together a two-out rally of their own in the seventh, collecting two unearned runs on a bases-loaded error that would have ended the inning to make it a 6-2 ballgame.

TCU answered in the bottom of the frame with a lead-off home run from Josh Watson to push the lead back to five, 7-2.

Oklahoma State pulled within three, 7-4, in the eighth on a two-out, two-run double but the Cowboys would get no closer. Marcelo Perez came on and pitched a perfect ninth with a pair of strikeouts to lock up his fourth save of the season.

With the victory, TCU improves to 17-7 overall and 3-1 in Big 12 play. The Horned Frogs and the Cowboys will square off in Game 2 of the series on Saturday afternoon at 2. The game will be televised on FSSW.
