DALLAS — The Baylor Bears produced a four-run fifth inning to launch themselves to a 5-1 win over the Dallas Baptist Patriots Tuesday at Horner Ballpark.
Catcher Shea Langeliers hit his first home run of the season as part of a 2-of-4 effort at the plate.
“He has been working so hard, trying to get his timing back after the injury and the surgery,” said Baylor coach Steve Rodriguez. “He has hit a lot of balls really hard without much to show for it. He had two phenomenal at bats and it’s good to get him going like that today.”
First baseman Chase Wehsener went a perfect 3-of-3 for the Bears in the nine hole. Wehsener also added a walk and a run scored in the game.
Said Rodriguez: “He is very versatile. No matter what skill I give him, I am going to get a good effort from him. Like today, we put the slash on and he executed it perfectly. He brings a very selfless nature to our team. He may not get a lot of accolades, but he is a huge part of this program and the success of this team.”
Baylor went through six different arms on the evening. Jacob Ashkinos went two complete innings to start the game, and Brooks Helmer, a right-handed freshman from Rockwall, Texas, threw 2.0 innings and gave up the Patriots’ only run, a solo shot home run from Herbert Iser in the bottom of the fourth inning. Helmer earned his first collegiate win as the Bears plated five runs in the top of the fifth inning.
Daniel Caruso produced a shutout fifth inning, and Ryan Leckich threw 2.0 scoreless innings with fanning four batters. Luke Boyd went 1-2-3 in the eighth inning, and Kyle Hill also faced the minimum while collecting a strikeout. All in all, Baylor pitchers allowed just two hits in the final five innings.
Baylor returns to Waco to continue their Big 12 schedule with a three-game series with No. 12 Texas. Game one is Friday with 8:00 p.m. first pitch from Baylor Ballpark and the action televised on ESPNU.
