AUSTIN, Texas – Kansas State jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, as they won the series opener over No. 14 Texas Baseball, 6-4, Friday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

The Longhorns (22-14, 4-5 Big 12) allowed a pair of first-inning runs on two Kansas State doubles. Texas starting pitcher Bryce Elder was able to rebound with four-straight scoreless innings until the Wildcats hit a two-run homer in the sixth.

Texas got on the board in the third inning after Duke Ellis was hit by a pitch with two outs. Ellis stole second base and scored on an RBI single by Masen Hibbeler.

After Kansas State’s homer, the Longhorns fought right back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth. Hibbeler started the inning with a single and scored on a double by Austin Todd. After a walk by Zach Zubia, Tate Shaw drove in a run with a single to right field to make the score 4-3.

Kansas State had another answer, scoring in the seventh to extend the lead to 5-3. Kolby Kubichek was called on out of the bullpen to get out of the seventh-inning jam. The next inning, the Wildcats were able to get a run off of Kubichek to extend the lead to 6-3.

Texas scored on more in the eighth on an RBI double by Zubia.

Kamron Fields pitched a scoreless 1 1/3 innings out of the bullpen. He struck out three Wildcat hitters.

Texas and Kansas State will continue the series on Saturday at 1 p.m. at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
