
ASHDOWN, Ark. – Ashdown jumped on Genoa Central early Monday to beat the Dragons, 10-7, winning its 10th straight game, and the 3A South Region Baseball title at City Park.
“It wasn’t a typical Ashdown day,” said Ashdown coach Charles Cross. “We’ve been patient throughout the tournament, but today we came out and scored a lot in the first two innings. We put on a good show for the hometown fans.
“Genoa Central has a very good baseball team. We split with them in two extra inning game during the regular season, but they finished first. We’ve been hot lately, and beaten some good teams, like Pleasant Grove and Nashville.”
Bond survives against Genoa Central
Junior Brett Bond was the winning pitcher against the Dragons. He went the distance, but was at his pitch-limit when the game ended.
Bradley Bearden led the Panthers’ offense with three singles. Blake Ritter and Coleman Newberry had two singles each, while Will Burnett drove in three runs in addition to having a single.
Ashdown begins play in the 3A state tournament Thursday morning against Dardanelle.
Genoa Central (20-6) had six different players with one hit each against the Panthers. Dylan Rushing and Andrew Cotseones had a double each.
The Dragons open play in Harrison against Cave City Thursday at 12:30 p.m.
