LONGVIEW, Texas – Two costly errors by Chireno in the seventh inning Wednesday allowed Bloomburg to go a game up in their Region III-A softball championship series at LeTourneau University, 2-0.

Both the Lady Wildcats’ Corrine Ray, and Chireno’s Kayla Durrett took no-hitters into the seventh. Durrett finished with a no-hitter, the two errors proving to be her undoing.

Bloomburg (16-8) is now one win away from its first-ever appearance at the Class A state tournament in Austin. The best-of-three series resumes at LeTourneau on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.

Ray walked the first batter she faced, then retired the next 18 before yielding a leadoff single to Alaina Goodwin in the bottom of the seventh. Ray walked two and struck out seven on 78 pitches. Durrett also walked two and struck out seven.

Owls’ errors prove costly against Bloomburg

Haylea Pond led off the Wildcats’ seventh with a fly to right field that was dropped. Braylee Harrist followed with a grounder to third, reaching first safely on an errant throw. The Lady Owls’ coach then chose to walk Haylee Breedlove intentionally to set up a force out at home. Emalee Blizzard accommodated the coach with a grounder to second, but Pond beat the throw home.

Harrist scored a few pitches later on Katie Mote’s sacrifice fly to left.

The Owls gave Bloomburg supporters a scare in the bottom of the seventh when Goodwin singled, and the next batter walked. However, Ray induced a shallow fly to center, and popup to shortstop Hanna Parker to end the game.
