Pernell “Sweetpea” Whitaker, a four-time boxing world champion, died in a pedestrian accident in Virginia Beach, Va., police say. Pernell was 55 years old.
According to police, on Sunday, July 14 at approximately 10:04 p.m., a 911 call was received for a vehicle-pedestrian accident at the intersection of Northampton Blvd. and Baker Rd. When officers arrived, they located a male victim who had been struck by a vehicle. The victim was identified as Whitaker, who died at the scene.
Whitaker won an Olympic gold medal in 1984 and the boxing magazine “Ring” named him the boxer of the year in 1989.
The case remains under investigation and no further information is available at this time.
