Arkansas High’s Barry Norton has reloaded his coaching staff and roster of players for the 2019 season.
Heading the new cast of coaches is veteran Rick Cullum, the Razorbacks’ new offensive coordinator. Balancing that experience are rookies Jared Brown, Kendrix McCann and Kierra Harris, all Arkansas High graduates and former Razarback athletes.
Brown, McCann, and Elgie Richards III all played football at Southern Arkansas University. Richards joined Norton’s team in 2018. Brown will be working with wide receivers, McCann with linebacker, while Harris works with the defensive backs.
“I think it’s a great story having these Arkansas High graduates on our staff,” said Norton. “We’re very excited to have Coach Cullum and his wealth of knowledge and experience. He is someone that I have watched from afar for years and have admired his work. His offenses stresses defenses from sideline to sideline, forcing defenses to defend every inch of the field.
“Rick is an outstanding teacher of the game. He is passionate about kids first and foremost, and loves to coach football. Our challenge is blending our thoughts and philosophies together to be the best that we can be as a football team. He will definitely fit in with our staff and kids and make us a better football team.”
Cullum comes to AHS from Liberty-Eylau
The 55-year-old Cullum comes to AHS from Liberty-Eylau, where he was offensive coordinator. He’s also coached at Pleasant Grove, Pottsboro, Sherman, Lufkin and Willis. He is a native of Princeton, Texas.
Cullum is aware the Razorbacks graduated a talented senior class last May, but remains confident Arkansas High will be a force this fall.
“Any good school graduates good player; that happens every year,” said Cullum. “I’m fortunate to get a job I know I’m going to like a lot.”
Ironically, the Razorbacks’ 2019 season opens with Liberty-Eylau.
