Freshman Thomas Curry was third medalist at the Denton Invitational Golf Tournament, helping Texas High finish fifth in the team standings among 30 schools.
Curry opened with a 3-under-par 69 at Robson Ranch, adding a 72 to lead the Tigers at 141. Teammate Carter Maneth was only one shot back at 142 with a pair of 71s. Camden Robertson posted scores of 80 and 75, while Will Patterson followed with 83 and 78. Jack Wilson rebounded from an 86 in the first round to a 76 on the second day.
Texas High shot 303 and 294 as a team, with all five golfers contributing. The Tigers continue their fall schedule Nov. 11 at Timerron Country Club in the Southlake Carroll Invitational.
The Tigers were fourth this fall in the Jay Brewer Tiger Classic at Texarkana Country Club. They edged 5A powerhouse Highland Park by three shots.
SWAGA team wins scramble at DeGray
Steve Breaux, Joe Burns, Ira Royal and Dave Helmick posted a 63 to win the Southwest Arkansas Seniors Golf Association scramble at DeGray Golf Club.
One shot back was the team of Jerry Beckham, John Eldridge, Mickey Evers, and Carl Standridge.
The SWAGA’s next event will be Nov. 7 at Texarkana Golf Ranch. It will be a two-man scramble, with two flights.
Baumann adds Oak Grove title to trophy case
Joey Baumann is not exactly a newcomer in Texarkana, but today he is establishing himself as one of the city’s premier golfers.
Baumann recently won the New Haven Golf Club Championship, and has now left a lasting impression by winning the Oak Grove Golf Club Championship with a gross score of 74. The was six shots better than runnerup Clif Perkins. Rodney Rogers was third with an 82.
The low net title went to Rick Goodsell, an 18-handicapper, who finished with a 68. Dennis Crawford was second with a 71, and Nick Williams shot 73.
