Robert Cochran’s Raiders survive late challenge by Pleasant Grove girls

Shanequa Henry scored two late baskets Tuesday to end an 11-0 run by Pleasant Grove in the fourth quarter. Winnsboro still beat the Lady Hawks.


WINNSBORO, Texas – Winnsboro’s Lady Raiders (16-6) avenged an early season loss to Pleasant Grove Tuesday night by defeating the Hawks, 61-52.

Pleasant Grove (15-4) beat the Lady Raiders in November, 68-56. Winnsboro is coached by former Liberty-Eylau and Texas High mentor Robert Cochran, who won a state championship at L-E.

Asia Lloyd’s conventional three-point play in the opening seconds gave Pleasant Grove its only lead of the game.


Raiders survived 11-0 run by Pleasant Grove

Trailing 51-40 in the fourth quarter, the Hawks scored 11 unanswered points to tie the game. Senior Shanequa Henry scored back-to-back baskets for the tie. A free throw by Winnsboro’s Maci Sims put the host team on top for good.

The Raiders led by as many as 10 points in the first half. However, Pleasant Grove pulled even at 25-25 on a bucket by Bryana Block. Winnsboro led 30-27 at intermission.

Pleasant Grove’s biggest deficit was 12 points (49-37) early in the final quarter.

Block led the Hawks’ attack with 15 points. Miaya Ware scored 11 points, Lloyd 10, Keyshawn Davis 8, and Henry 6.

The Hawks begin district play Friday night at home against North Lamar. Pleasant Grove will travel across town next Tuesday for an encounter with Liberty-Eylau.
