Aggravated assault charges upgraded to first degree felony


TEXARKANA — The Texarkana Texas Police Department is upgrading the aggravated assault charges against 19-year-old Dontavious Haney to a first degree felony after the death of the victim.

According to police, 21-year-old Denise Watson, who was Haney’s girlfriend, died on Saturday at approximately 8:00 p.m. at Wadley Regional Medical Center from injuries sustained from an altercation with Haney. Police have upgraded the charges to aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury of a family member.

Police say that Watson collapsed inside an apartment in the 1600 block of Peach Street on Friday morning after Haney allegedly punched Watson in the face after an argument. When Texarkana Texas police arrived on the scene, police say that Haney was attempting to perform CPR on Watson, who was lying on the floor the apartment.

Once officers determined Watson was not breathing, they took over attempts to resuscitate her until EMS arrived. Watson was later transported to Wadley Regional Medical Center. Police say that Watson sustained life-threatening injuries pertaining to damage to her brain.

Police arrested Haney at the scene and transported him to the Bi-State Jail. Haney’s bond was originally $100,000, but has now been increased to $1,000,000.
