Washington native Kealen Martin smashed a grand slam for Texas A&M University-Texarkana’s first roundtripper of the 2020 season Saturday. Those four runs were the difference in the Eagles’ 6-3 win over Friends University at George Dobson Field.
The Eagles also won Saturday’s opener behind the pitching of seniors Sam Wells and Mike Herrera, 3-1. TAMU-T climbs to 6-2 on the season.
A&M-Texarkana captured an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Joe Pearlman and Wyatt Stavinoha had back-to-back singles. Pearlman eventually scored on a wild pitch.
Kealen Martin hits bomb for Eagles
Stavinoha led off the third with a bunt hit. Jaylon Prince and Chris McGinty walked, and Martin hit a 1-0 offering over the left field fence to make it 5-0.
Friends cut its deficit to 5-3 with two runs in the fourth, and one in the sixth.
Braydon Cook and Peterson doubled in the bottom of the sixth to score the game’s final run.
Senior Jordan Johnson started on the hill for Texarkana, leaving in favor of Noah Vaughn in the fourth. Junior Trevor Stone pitched a scoreless seventh.
Friends had early lead in opener
In the first game Friends scored its only run in the third for an early 1-0 lead.
The Eagles answered promptly on doubles by Cal Hodgins and Stavinoha, with McGinty contributing a run-scoring single. Tim Frith and Brandon Riley also had singles for the winners.
Senior Sam Wells started on the mound for the Eagles. He allowed the one run, while scattering five hits, walking two and striking out three. Southpaw Mike Herrera earned a save. He allowed only one hit and struck out two in 2.1 innings of work.
