Pitching, defense cost Eagles game at Lyon College

Texas A&M University-Texarkana was Lyon College's seventh victim Tuesday in an 8-6 setback at Bateville, Ark.


BATESVILLE, Ark. – Pitching and defense played a role Tuesday as Lyon College defeated Texas A&M University-Texarkana, 8-6.

The Scots (7-0) roughed up Eagle starter Jared Davis in the first two innings. Four hits and a couple of errors added up to five runs and a 5-1 lead. Lyons College made it 6-1 in the third.

Texas A&M-Texarkana action scored the game’s first run, but wasted opportunities kept Lyon on top the entire game after the first inning.

Nash Winters started on the mound for the Scots, but it was Kylan Barnett getting the win in relief. In three innings he blanked the Eagles on no hits and four strikeouts.

Meanwhile, Jared Davis was Texakana’s starter, and suffered the loss. Carter Coats was the third of six Eagle pitchers. He held Lyon scoreless two innings on no hits and one strikeout.

Kylan Barnett led the Scots at the plate with three hits, while driving home four runs. Jake Michener also had three hits and scored four runs.

Texarkana’s offense came from Isaac D’Agostinol with two hits and a run. Wyatt Stavinoha, Jaylon Prince and Kealon Martiln contributed run-scoring hits. Martin and catcher Angel Mauricio had the Eagles’ only extra base hits.

The Eagles will be back in action Friday, playing College of the Ozarks at 1 p.m., and Mount Mercy Iowa afterwards.
