Eagles sweep Houston-Victoria; TAMU-T’s Cormier tosses no-hitter against Huston-Tillotson

Texas A&M University-Texarkana swept a doubleheader Friday at the University of Houston-Victoria. The Eagles' softball team split a twinbill with Huston-Tillotson.

 

VICTORIA, Texas – Wyat Stavinoha banged out three hits, and Cole Connally pitched six strong innings Friday as Texas A&M University-Texarkana swept a RRAC doubleheader from Houston-Victoria, 8-1 and 11-7.

The Eagles (12-7, 2-0) scored all the runs they would need in the second with a four-run uprising. They added one in the third and three more in the fourth.

Connally scattered seven hits, walked one and struck out four. Riley Owen got the final three outs on the mound.

TAMU-T hammered Victoria pitching for 11 hits. Kealon Martin had two singles, scoring a run and driving in a run. Catcher Cal Pequeno drove in two runs with a triple and scored. Chris McGinty had a run-scoring double, while Joe Pearlman and Brayden Cook added run-scoring hits.

Houston-Victoria jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the nightcap. The Eagles erased that deficit with five runs in the sixth. It was 5-5 in the seventh when Texarkana took command with four more runs.

Martin homers against Houston-Victoria

Martin had a home run and double for the Eagles, driving in four runs. Pearlman and Jaylen Prince had two hits each. McGinty drove in two runs with a double, and scored twice.

Righthander Zac Harrington started on the hill for the Eagles. He and reliever Carter Coats were roughed up, but Coats got the win with Trevor Stone getting the final two outs in the ninth.

The two teams play another doubleheader Saturday, the first game starting at noon.

TAMU-T softball team splits

Dorrie Cormier tossed a no-hitter Friday in pitching Texas A&M-Texarkana past Huston-Tillotson, 5-0. It was the RRAC opener for both teams.

The only baserunner Cormier allowed came on her own error. She struck out six. Lauren Huff and Erika Richardson led the Eagles at the plate with two hits each. Huff drove in two runs and scored one. Jaden Lance also had a run-scoring single.

Huston-Tillotson won the second game, 8-3. Katelyn Slamer, Jordyn Logan and Richardson had two hits each for Texarkana (7-5, 1-1).
