Texas High senior Owen Likins stole some of Carthage’s spotlight Thursday afternoon in the 2020 Watty Myers Relays.

Likins ran the fastest 800 meters in Texas so far this year in 1:53.89. His younger brother Evan Likins was second in 2:06.82.

However, the biggest trophy went to Carthage, which piled up 119 points in the running events to win the team title. The Tigers were a distant second at 87. Heavy rain Wednesday night forced the field events to be canceled, or the outcome could have been different.

Miles Halton led Carthage’s assault on the Texas High oval. He scored 22 points, finishing second to teammate Jai Brager in the 110 hurdles, and winning the 300 hurdles. Halton also ran a leg on the Bulldogs’ 4×400 relay, which placed second behind Hallsville.

Hallsville’s Cortland Venters won individual high point honors in the boys division with 25. Venters won the 100 in 11.06, running into a stiff breeze. He also won the 200 in 21.9, while anchoring the Bobcats to more gold in the 4×400 in 3:25.53.
