HAWKINS, Texas – There’s now a four-way logjam at the top of the Red River Athletic Conference baseball standings.
Texas A&M-Texarkana lost its first conference game Saturday to Jarvis Christian University, 7-6, in the first game of a doubleheader. The Eagles did rebound in the nightcap for an 8-3 victory.
Zac Harrington was given early 4-0 and 5-1 leads in the opener, but couldn’t prevent the Bulldogs from tying the score 5-5 in the third inning. Jarvis Christian (12-12, 2-4) scored the eventual winning run in the bottom of the sixth.
Justin Lockley was the winning pitcher. Kevin Ciprian hit a solo home run for the Bulldogs.
TAMU-T built its early lead on a grand slam by Jaylan Prince in the first inning. Prince also had a single. Blake Seagraves had two hits for the Eagles, and drove in a run. Both Joe Pearlman and Wyat Stavinoha had one hit and scored.
Eagles fall into 4-team logjam at top
The Eagles (17-8, 5-1) earned their share of the logjam at the top behind the pitching of 6-7 Sam Wells and Carter Coats. Wells pitched the first 5 2/3 innings. He allowed five hits and all three runs, while striking out five. Coats got a save by blanking the Bulldogs the final 3 1/3 innings on one hit.
Pearlman led Texarkana at the plate with four singles and two runs scored. Kealen Martin had three hits and drove in four runs. Prince had two hits, and Brayden Cook had a two-run single.
LSU-Shreveport (18-4), Our Lady of the Lake (15-10), and LSU-Alexandria (8-9) are tied with the Eagles with 5-1 conference records.
Texarkana will be back in action Tuesday at home against Bacone College of Muskogee, Okla.
