AMARILLO, Texas – Charlie Welch delivered his fourth home run, and Tyler Trovinger singled in the winner in the eighth inning Thursday as Texarkana beat the Amarillo Sod Dogs, 6-5.
The Twins’ victory left the Sod Dogs tied for first place in the TCL with Tulsa. The Drillers routed Amarillo Sod Squad, 11-2. In other league play Round Rock routed Victoria, 12-1. Arcadiana beat San Antonio, 3-1.
Texarkana (2-7) got five strong innings from starting pitcher Ty Hoaker, a senior at Harding University. Andrew Hernandez and Josh Sylvester blanked the Sod Dogs the final three innings after they had taken a 5-4 lead.
Charlie Welch hits another dinger
The Sod Dogs led 1-0 going into the fourth. Charlie Welch walked, advancing on a single by Jay French. Both scored on a double by Reed Spenrath.
That lead became 4-1 in the sixth. Welch got another free pass, and one out later Spenrath singled. Newcomer Casey Roth singled home Welch. Spenrath scored after two wild pitches.
Amarillo stormed back in its half of the sixth. Three hits, a walk and the Twins’ second error of the game made it 5-4. Enrique Porchas had a 2-run double in the inning.
Welch’s fourth homer in five games ignited the Twins’ eighth. French singled and stole second. He scored on Trovinger’s single to center.
The Sod Dogs loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth, but Sylvester came in to get the final out and save.
Tulsa is scheduled to return home Friday to play the Amarillo Sod Squad.
