AMARILLO, Texas – Pitching and defense cost the Texarkana Twins a possible win Tuesday against the Amarillo Sod Squad.
The Twins led twice, only to see Amarillo rally to tie the game 4-4 going to the bottom of the ninth. Ryan Lee singled for the Sod Squad, and pinch-runner Kyle Hogwood scored the winning run on Jose Torres single. In between and infield error and hit batsman staged Torres’ heroics.
Defense was key to outcome
Texarkana had three errors, while the Sod Squad played perfect defense.
Amarillo’s 5-4 victory improves its record in the Texas Collegiate League to 6-4, while the Twins slip to 3-10. The two teams meet Wednesday night in the fifth of six games in Amarillo.
Trailing 1-0 in the second inning, the Twins captured the lead on a two-run homer by Tyler Trovinger.
The Sod Squad tied the game in the fourth. Texarkana regained the lead in the fifth when Jake Slunder struck out, but reached safely on a passed ball. Slunder stole second, eventually scoring on a single by Charlie Welch.
Twins threaten in eighth inning
Amarillo was leading 4-3 in the seventh when Slunder singled, stole second and scored on Jay French’s single.
The Twins threatened with two baserunners in the eighth, but Nic Daniels got out of the jam with a strikeout. Daniels got the win in relief of starter Cooper Harris. Casey Rother was the loser for the Twins.
Trovinger led Texarkana at the plate with his home run and single. Torres, Kamron Willman and Ryan Lee all had two hits for the Sod Squad.
In other TCL action Round Rock beat Arcadiana, 4-3. San Antonio edged Victoria, 2-1. The Amarillo Sod Dogs shut out Tulsa, 4-0, and Frisco surprised Brazos Valley, 5-4.
