AMARILLO, Texas – Finally the table turned and the Texarkana Twins gutted out a dramatic 9-8 win Wednesday over the Amarillo Sod Squad.
The Twins (4-10) rallied for four runs in the ninth inning, three on Reed Spenrath’s first home run. Tyler Trovinger scored what proved to be the decisive run on a wild pitch.
Texarkana committed seven errors in the game. The Twins were in real trouble in the bottom of the ninth when two errors and a walk loaded the bases with two outs. Jonathan Sylvester earned a save by getting the final out on a fly to left.
Spenrath’s homer rallies Twins
Jay French ignited the Twins’ late rally with a leadoff walk. Jake Slunder also drew a free pass, both scoring ahead of Spenrath’s roundtripper. Trovinger singled, reaching third on two fielder’s choices before scoring.
The Twins never led until the ninth. The Sod Squad (6-5) scored twice in the first, and three more in the sixth after Texarkana scored its first run. French walked in the sixth and scored on Charlie Welch’s sixth double of the season.
Pleasant Grove graduate Seth Hopkins played hero the next two innings with a two-run double, and a two-run single.
Trovinger, Ricardo Leonett, Austin Colon and Hopkins all had two hits for the Twins. Ben Rosenblum had a home run and single for Amarillo. Julio Marcana also homered for the Sod Squad.
Texas A&M-Texarkana’s Flaqvio Tirado was the winning pitcher in relief of Ty Hoeker. Everett Hurst, the fourth of five Amarillo pitchers, was the loser.
The two teams conclude their six-game series in Amarillo Thursday night.
In other TCL play the Amarillo Sod Dogs edged Tulsa, 2-1. Brazos Valley defeated Frisco, 7-2. San Antonio dumped Victoria, 6-2.
