The Arkansas State Police is investigating the death of a three-year-old girl and the injury of her 15-month-old sister after both were found inside a car parked outside their mother’s home.
According to state police, 21-year-old Kaylee Petchenik of Booneville contacted police around 2:00 p.m. and said that, after waking up from a nap, her children were missing. Police say that when Booneville Police responded to the residence at 482 West Fifth Street, an officer discovered both children unconscious and lying in the vehicle’s back floorboard.
Police say that both children appeared to be victims of heat stroke.
Laykn Petchenik was pronounced dead at a local hospital, while Olivia Petchenik was transported to a Little Rock area hospital. Police say that Olivia is stable, but is in critical condition.
Laykn’s body has been transported to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory. Special agents of the state police’s criminal investigation division are leading the investigation. When the investigation has concluded, a case file will be submitted to the Logan County prosecuting attorney for consideration.
