Denison has replaced Arkansas High on Texas High’s 2020 football schedule. The Yellow Jackets and Tigers will clash Oct. 2 at Tiger Stadium in Grim Park.

The 105th meeting between the Tigers and Arkansas High was canceled. Texas’ University Interscholastic League delayed football in 6A and 5A because of a spike in the coronavirus. The Razorbacks also lost a game with Mount Pleasant.

Schools affected in Texas cannot practice until Sept. 7, with season openers postponed until Sept. 24-25. THS and Arkansas High were originally slated to play Sept. 4 at Tiger Stadium.

“We tried to figure out a way to play Arkansas High,” said Texas High athletic director and head football coach Gerry Stanford. “The Arkansas Activities Association has not made a decision yet on the football season.

“It’s disappointing for our senior class. That game is big to all of us, both communities and both states. Coach (Barry) Norton and I worked really hard to see if we could figure something out, but we had to make a decision.”

Denison returns strong lineup in 2020

Texas High and Denison are old rivals, and expected to be playoff teams in 2020.

The Yellow Jackets return 16 starters, including nine on defense from a 6-4 team in 2019. Dave Campbell Magazine has Denison picked second behind Frisco in District 7-5A Division II. Texas High is predicted to finish second in District 9-5A Division II behind Marshall.

Texas High’s season is now scheduled to kick off Sept. 25 at Mount Pleasant. The Razorbacks will hopefully play the Paris Wildcats on Aug. 28. Norton was unavailable for comment about the Sept. 4 open date.
