McCarter named TISD elementary teacher of the year, Wicks named secondary teacher of the year

TEXARKANA — The Texarkana Independent School District named Christy McCarter as their elementary teacher of the year, and also named Kara Wicks as their secondary teacher of the year.

McCarter is the fifth grade English language arts and reading teacher at Spring Lake Park Elementary School. The TISD Leadership Academy product has spent 20 years in education and holds a bachelor of science in interdisciplinary studies from Texas A&M Unviersity-Texarkana. McCarter is also a member of the Academic Lighthouse Team at Spring Lake Park Elementary.

Wicks is an English, Latin, and College Prep teacher at Texas High School and has been in education for 10 years. Wicks has a bachelor of science in English and a master’s in interdisciplinary studies from Texas A&M University-Texarkana. The Chrome Cart Academy product also leads professional development workshops for the district and served as a grade level PLC leader and a curriculum development consultant.

McCarter and Wicks both are devoted to the growth of their students, not only in the classroom, but in the rest of society, and each tries to forge open lines of communication between themselves and their students.

The awards move each educator forward for consideration as the Region VIII teacher of the year.
