ARLINGTON, Texas — The Texas Rangers announced prior to Tuesday’s game against the San Diego Padres that the club has selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Luis García (#45) from the Alternate Training Site. Additionally, the team has placed right-handed pitcher Juan Nicasio on the restricted list for personal reasons and removed him from the 40-man Major League roster.
García, 33, has been with the Alternate Training Site group since he was assigned there on July 19. He last pitched with the Alternate Site squad on August 13 (1.0 IP, 20 pitches) and was part of the five-man taxi squad allowed by MLB that traveled for the Rangers’ road trip to Colorado last weekend. He made 5 appearances in Summer Camp intrasquad games, posting a 1.69 ERA (1 ER/5.1 IP) with one walk against 4 strikeouts. García also pitched in 6 Spring Training contests before the shutdown, allowing 4 runs in 6.0 innings with one walk and 7 strikeouts.
A non-roster invitee to the Rangers’ Major League Spring Training camp, García has pitched in the big leagues in each of the last seven seasons with Philadelphia (2013-18) and Los Angeles-AL (2019), combining for a 14-15 record with 6 saves and a 4.17 ERA over 315 games/2 starts.
Nicasio has made 2 appearances for Texas since he had his contract selected from the Alternate Site on Friday, allowing 6 runs in 1.1 innings.
