Top-ranked Carthage (3-0) scored three touchdowns in the third quarter Friday at Hawk Stadium to run away from Pleasant Grove, 35-7.
The Hawks drew first blood when senior Nick Martin scored from five yards on the final play of the first quarter.
Carthage answered in the second quarter on the first of three touchdowns by senior Mason Courtney. The 185-pound back scored again in the opening minutes of the third period. Two minutes later Kavonte Brown-Hoskins caught a 66-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Kai Horton.
Bulldogs dominate third quarter play
Courtney’s third touchdown came with 2:39 left in the third quarter on a 38-yard run. Horton passed to Montrel Hatten Jr. for the Bulldogs’ final six-pointer.
Horton finished the game 13 of 22 for 203 yards, while Courtney rushed for 113 yards on 15 carries.
Pleasant Grove managed only 188 total yards against the Bulldogs’ defense. The Hawks had little passing game with 16 yards. Senior Nick Martin led the Hawks’ usually potent running game with 49 yards on 11 carries. Hayden Koller ran for 35 yards on six totes.
The Hawks open district play next Friday at Pittsburg. Carthage celebrates Homecoming against Center.

Texas High won its second game of 2020 over Denison, 24-3. Van scored three second half touchdowns to beat Liberty-Eylau, 35-14.
In Class 3A action Gladewater beat New Boston, 61-16. Paul Pewitt edged Hooks, 21-20. Atlanta got its first win over Sabine, 28-14. Queen City stopped New Diana, 20-3. Hughes Springs routed Ore City, 34-6.
Linden-Kildare posted its first win by defeating Union Grove, 40-30.
