Tigers Pounce on Jackrabbits for a Homecoming Victory


The Texas High Tigers pounced on the Forney Jackrabbits for a Homecoming victory. This win makes the Tigers 3-0 after last week’s victory against Denison. Before the game, senior Fezeka Barnes was named the Homecoming Court Maid of Honor and senior Ashlyn Stiger was named Homecoming Queen.

Tigers defeat Jackrabbits 49-10 in Homecoming game

First Quarter

The Jackrabbits received the ball at their own 37 yard line to start the game. 15 yards worth of offensive penalties pushed Forney back to their own 22 yard line. They then ended their drive with a fumble that gave the ball to the Tigers at the Jackrabbit 16 yard line.

Despite the short field, the Tigers could not capitalize. Their drive ended with an unsuccessful field goal attempt and zero points as a result.

Forney started out on their own 20 yard line for their second possession. The first play was a pass that was intercepted by linebacker Jackson Halter and brought back to the Forney 19 yard line. 

The Tigers had great field position once again. They made the most of the opportunity with a 10 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Brayson McHenry to defensive lineman Clayton Smith. The score was 7-0 with Texas High in the lead after a successful PAT by kicker Oscar Hernandez.

A few solid plays by the Jackrabbits almost led them to a touchdown, but they were forced to settle for a field goal on 4th down from the 5 yard line. Forney kicker Cameron Newell’s successful field goal attempt made the score 7-3 with the Tigers ahead.

Texas High then finished a 68 yard drive with a 67 yard touchdown pass from McHenry to quarterback Rian Cellers after Cellers was moved to receiver. The Tigers’ touchdown made the score 14-3 with 4:55 left in the first quarter.

Forney countered quickly with a kick return for a touchdown by receiver Brayden Kirkland. However, this score would be the last of the night for the Jackrabbits.

Runs by McHenry and running back Braylon Stewart set up a 17 yard pass from McHenry to receiver Caden Miller. These plays were highlights of a smooth drive that resulted in a 19 yard touchdown pass from McHenry to Cellers to end the first quarter. The score was 21-10 with the Tigers increasing their lead.

Second Quarter

The Jackrabbits ended their next possession with a punt to the Tiger 1 yard line. The Tigers were not fazed as they marched down field. Texas High capped off a 99 yard drive with a 46 yard touchdown pass from McHenry to receiver Tre Roberts. This score pushed the Tigers’ lead to 28-10.

Forney was forced to punt once again. Texas High started their next drive from their own 10 yard line with 3:43 left in the half. The Tigers ran down the clock while advancing down the field.

At the end of the second quarter McHenry threw a Hail Mary from the 24 yard line with seven seconds left. Cellers miraculously came down with the ball in the end zone for his third touchdown of the night. Texas High went into halftime with a lead of 35-10. 

Third Quarter

Texas High received the ball at their own 25 yard line to begin the second half. A couple of receptions by receiver Blake Rogers led to a 7 yard touchdown run by Stewart. Stewart’s run increased the Tigers’ lead to 42-10.

The Tigers received the ball on their own 9 yard line after the Jackrabbits punted yet again. This drive ended the same as the last with a 3 yard touchdown run by Stewart. Stewart’s second score boosted the Tigers to a lead of 49-10 with 3.8 seconds left in the third quarter. 

Fourth Quarter

The Jackrabbits continued with their offensive struggles and were forced to punt. The Tigers ended their next drive with a punt as well.

Forney punted one last time. The Tigers received the ball at their own 44 yard line and drained out the rest of the clock to end the game with a final score of 49-10.
