TEXARKANA, Ark. – The late Jay Brewer predicted two years prior to is death that Texas High has a special group of golfers coming up. Those young men proved the Tigers’ former coach knew what he was talking about at the 2020 Jay Brewer Memorial Tiger Classic.
Texas High shot 294 in the final round of the 54-hole event at Texarkana Country Club. That score gave the Tigers an 868 total, and the championship over several traditional powerhouse golf schools, including Highland Park.
The Scots finished second 10 shots back of Texas High at 878. Marcus High School was third at 893, with Jesuit Prep fourth with a 902 total.
Curry second to Maneth in Tiger Classic
Carter Maneth won individual medalist honors. He shot 72 in Saturday’s final round after posting back-to-back 68s for an 8-under-par 208 total. Maneth’s closest challenge came from junior teammate Thomas Curry, who also shot 72 on the final day. Curry had a 1-over 217 total.
Taking home the third-place medal in the individual competition was Camden Robertson. He posted a 74 Saturday for a 2-over total of 218.
Jackson Wilson and John Patterson also played key roles in Texas High’s title run.
Wilson posted three consecutive rounds of 76. Patterson shot 77, 73 and 79 for 229.
It’s in deed a rare high school performance when all five players on a team shoot lower than 80 every round.
