Last-second field goal sends Buckeyes past Pleasant Grove, 31-28

GILMER, Texas – Jose Hernandez’s 19-yard field goal on the final play of the game brought an end to Pleasant Grove’s five-game winning streak against the Gilmer Buckeyes, 31-28.

The Buckeyes (9-1, 5-0) won the District 8-4A Division II crown with the win, and the top seed going into next week’s playoffs. Pleasant Grove (7-3, 4-1) will be the second seed.

Buckeyes trailed 21-7 at halftime

Pleasant Grove scored the game’s first points, building a 21-7 advantage in the first half. Freshman Jaylen Boardley scored for the Hawks on a 38-yard run. He led the Hawks’ wing-t offense with 148 yards on 20 carries.

Quarterback Brandon Tennison led the Buckeyes’ comeback with his arm and legs. He accounted for 419 of Gilmer’s 456 yards. Tennison completed 17 of 29 passes for 238 yards and two touchdowns. He also was the game’s leading rusher with 181 yards on 18 carries.


Tennison completed a 20-yard touchdown pass to Dylan Fluellen in the second quarter to make it 7-7. It was Tennison’s 68-yard sprint at the beginning of the fourth quarter that gave Gilmer its first lead.

The Hawks answered back on a pair of 2-yard scoring runs by senior Nick Martin. Martin also scored on an 8-yard run with 3:46 left to tie the game. He rushed for 111 of Pleasant Grove’s 342 yards.
